One Day At A Time...

All for His Glory...

It was Day 6 at school today and I've come to the realization that I am a professional teacher.

I say that with awe and a bit of hesitation because for the first time in my 4 years of teaching - I feel like a professional. Why?

It's this school district. They treat you like a professional - unlike NYC... I have not changed who I am one bit. So I know it's not me. It's the way people treat you - they speak respectfully - they respect your time and energy. They address you by name and value what you do in the classroom. They are supportive and help you practically set goals to become better. Isn't that professional. There is no yelling at adults by adults. Everyone is well mannered, polite, cautious and careful. People work to help each other not hurt each other. This is a professional atmosphere. The only thing that made me sad in the midst of this very happy thought... how many NYC teachers do not have the opportunity to be treated as a professional - because of the admin, the city, the government, money, parents, lack of support, lack of supplies, lack of technology.... i can go on - but how long will they be able to go on?

NYC has good teachers - I know many of them... do they have to leave NYC to feel like they're good? NYC needs good teachers and they need support and care... just like anywhere else... i just hope that they don't leave teaching altogether - try another place before you give up. Maybe this is a place I can stay forever...

so maybe now I can have a business card too... "professional teacher"
